![]() ![]() At one point King even came back for a while. By this time the personnel changes started coming hot and heavy. By 1960 King was pursuing a successful solo career, and Rudy Lewis took the lead on early-'60s Drifters hits like "Some Kind of Wonderful," "Please Stay," "Up on the Roof," and "On Broadway." After Lewis died unexpectedly the spotlight shifted to Johnny Moore, who fronted the group on such mid-'60s singles as "Under the Boardwalk" and "Saturday Night at the Movies." After the group's world-beating tenure at Atlantic Records ended in 1972 they made an unlikely move to England. At the same time, Bill Pinkney and other previous members began touring as Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters, continuing to perform for decades to come. With King up front the group made major inroads in pop and rock 'n' roll, on classics like "There Goes My Baby" in 1959, and "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "This Magic Moment" in 1960. At this point the membership of The Drifters began its pattern of constant change, but further R&B hits followed over the next few years, including "Ruby Baby" and "Adorable." But manager George Treadwell owned the rights to the group's name, and after a conflict in late 1958 he fired all the members and brought in an entirely new cast of characters to be The Drifters, led by Ben E. Initially billed as Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters, the group scored a No 1 R&B hit with their debut single, "Money Honey." They had a few more big R&B hits before McPhatter quit in late '54 to go solo. The initial incarnation of The Drifters began in 1953 when Clyde McPhatter of Billy Ward and His Dominoes broke off to start his own group.
